Plate Tectonics

Essay:

On our earth, the lithosphere moves all the time. It is called the plate tectonics theory. I agree with this theory because it is provided in different ways. In many years ago, all continents were one piece. There was only one land in the world and it is the Pangaea.Because of the convection currents in the mantle, the plates started to move and the continent spread out. 

The convection currents are happen in the mantle. They are the hot magma going the top and the cool magma going to the bottom. That makes a cycle and the movement of the magma cause the plates move. That is why we have different kind of boundaries on our earth. For example, trenches ,mountains and volcanoes are created in convergent boundaries. Mid-ocean ridge, rife valley are created in divergent boundaries. Vaults ,earthquakes and tsunamis are created in transform boundaries. 

Another piece of evidence is Alfred Wegener discovered Pangaea in 1915. He looked at the shape of continents and discovered that continents were together. For example, South America was next to Africa and Antarctica was next to Australia. 


 Also,he confirmed that how the continents should be combine base on the species of animals on different continents. Because animals will not swim across the ocean, the fossil can be a forceful evidence of  Pangaea.

In my opinion, I think the Pangaea was provided and it is really existed. I think the plate movements on earth are amazing. That created different kind of geographical features. It makes our earth looks unique.

What did you enjoy most about this project and why?

I enjoy the part that we can do the lab by ourselves because we learn how is the convection currents work and what does it affect. 

What was most challenging for you during this project and why?

I think the most challenging part is I have make the mini-poster look nice because I am not good at cutting paper.

What new skills did you learn from doing this project?

I learnt how to find a location by using the longitude and latitude in a map. 

Is there anything that you could have done to improve any of your work? Explain.

I should have finished my work earlier and then I would have time to check and improve my project. 

What would you change about this project? 

I would like to have a chance to choose which part I can do two project and which part I will do one.  

Heliocentric VS Geocentric Model

Vocabulary:

Astronomy-天文學-  the study of universe and stars.

Geocentric Model-地心說模型- The model that shows the Earth is in the centre of the universe and the Sun and  other planets revole around it.

Heliocentric Model-日心模型 The model that shows the Sun is in the centre and the Earth and other planets revolve around it.

Ptolemy-托勒密 a astrologer who believes the Geocentrism.

Copernicus-哥白尼 The first person who stated the theory of heliocentrism.

Revolution-公轉 Planets revolve around the Sun.

Galileo-伽利略 A scientist who advanced the theory of heliocentrism.

Summary:

     People study the universe since long time ago. This is called the astronomy. Before 16th century, people believed the Geocentric model which is the sun and other planets revolve around the earth. Catholics church and scientist like Ptolemy believed it and thought that was how the universe look like. Until a man called Copernicus appeared, he stated the heliocentric model. He believed that the earth revolves around the sun. Later, Galileo helped to improve the heliocentric model. In nowadays, people believe the heliocentric model because it is proved by many scientists.

Critical Thinking Question:

How is earth affected by movement(revolution)?

Earth revolution causes the four season. It is because the orbit of earth is ellipse. Sometimes it is closer and sometimes it is further. That is why we have Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter on earth.

Reflection:

I enjoyed making the movie with my group mates. It is fun and interesting. I think the most challenging part is to memorize all the information. I learned how to use the iMovie during this project. If I could do it one more time, I will add more images to the film because I think it will be easier to let other people to understand what is my topic about.
